According to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, the Bears are doing “extensive research” on top five QB prospect Brad Kaaya. Entering the 2016 college season Kaaya was in the conversation with Deshaun Watson and Deshone Kizer for the top overall quarterback prospect, and nearly three months into the season there is still no clear consensus among experts how those three should rank come draft day. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky has also entered that conversation and is ranked higher than Maaya depending on where you look.
Mel Kiper, however, has Kaaya at #25 on his Big Board and ranks him as the second best QB to Watson who is currently ranked #8 overall. Here’s a snippet of what Kiper has to say:
He has a big arm, touch and growing poise as he reads the whole field. But he does force some throws and take some chances, and he needs to be more aware of coverages.
There is plenty of evaluating left to do and the Bears will undoubtedly scout all of these players extensively. It is interesting though, to hear a specific name mentioned this early in the process, so it will be fun to watch Brad Kaaya as he performs the rest of the season. The hope is that as each Bears loss piles up, fans may be that much closer to new hope at the quarterback position.
